Sharon K – Belly Dance

I have always held a passion for music and dancing.  One of my earliest memories of dancing is using my hairbrush as a microphone and dancing around the pool table to ABBA!  I had a natural rhythm for movement.  My parents even met each other at ballroom dancing all those years ago.  I was fortunate their talent was passed onto me.

I dabbled in rhythmic gymnastics for a few years as a child but I came to realise with my (diagnosed astigmatism) that I was a little bit dangerous to be around when it came to using the clubs.  There were a lot of close calls!  I then moved onto Jazz Ballet until I was 18 which seemed to be a lot safer for those around me!

I then moved onto Ballroom Dancing at Gilkinson’s Dance studio until I was 23, achieving the Gold Ballroom award.  The next phase in my life started when I married 31 years ago.  I ended up horse riding instead for 10 years.  In 2005 after many years of no dance in my life and missing it terribly, I started lessons with a Belly Dancing teacher.  I was looking for something a little bit different. She taught her Body Flow style which was a good introduction to Belly Dance (Raqs Sharki) but by 2006 I knew I needed to find a teacher who could challenge me more.

In 2006 I was very fortunate to find Tabetha from Midland Dance Studios as my teacher and have been with her ever since.  It has been an amazing journey with Tabetha and I would not be the dancer/teacher I am today without her.

I have performed at many events where there have also been national and international guest artists. I have been part of many workshops with world renowned dance teachers, helping to take my dance skills to the next level. I will always be a ‘student’ of the dance.  It is a lifetime journey with so many different styles and so much to learn.

I was previously part of Raqs Zahara Dance Troupe and am now one of the founding members of Zahara Dance Company.  I love performing, whether that be for stage, corporate events, private events or community events.  I love to share my joy and passion for dance through performing and teaching.

I hope that I can inspire others to take the journey with me.
